Starting a career in engineering is always a learning curve, but experiencing it through the eyes of an apprentice brings a fresh perspective on growth, challenge and opportunity. Henry, one of our talented apprentices at the JPP Group, reflects on his journey so far — from stepping into the industry for the first time to gaining hands‑on experience that’s shaping his future.
“I started off as a trainee technician in the highways department not knowing anything about it or how to use AutoCad. I began by learning the basics, becoming familiar with the software, and with the support of experienced colleagues around me, I soon became proficient. Over time as competence grew, I’ve been given opportunities and learnt many new skills. I’ve worked on 2D and 3D road geometry design, road sign design, road marking design, vehicle simulation, and drainage designs. Sometimes I get to experience life as a civil engineer helping them out also. What’s great is that no project is the same with each job presenting different constraints. On the highways team, we work on a variety of jobs from small junctions to roundabouts, construction accesses, complex drainage designs, remedial works, optioneering and more! Learning on the side at university has broadened my perspective, encouraging me to think about problems in ways I otherwise wouldn’t and helping me think more like an engineer. Working towards being a recognised professional has given me the opportunity to reflect on all the jobs I’ve previously worked on and the skills I have acquired. The journey as an apprentice from the ground up has been great, and I’m looking forward to becoming a well-seasoned engineer.”
