Project Success – EasyJet Hangar, Luton

Client and Project Success, JPP News

Our Geotechnical & Environmental team were delighted to complete slab and ground investigations for our valued client, Neville Special Projects Ltd.

The hangars are being refurbished for the use of commercial easyJet planes. The proposal includes a new engine bay within Hanger 60 to comprise walls and a crane, as well as a new lift shaft. Outside of Hanger 9, a new retaining wall is proposed along the north, along with new surfacing for heavy goods vehicle deliveries along with a turning area.
Prior to the ground investigation, mining stability searches were completed following a review of mapped geology comprising superficial clay-with-flints over chalk bedrock with the potential for chalk mins and dissolution features identified. In addition, unexploded ordnance desk-based searches were completed to establish the risk of UXO’s ahead of any intrusive works.

A ground investigation was undertaken within Hanger 60 and outside of Hanger 9, both originally used by Monarch Airlines. The ground investigation includes utilities clearance, on site UXO clearance including downhole magnetometer testing, concrete coring, TRL DCP testing and window sampling. The investigation confirmed the slab details and shallow ground conditions to inform the foundation design for the new structures and equipment.
