The Government is currently consulting on reforms to Land Remediation Relief (LRR), a tax incentive designed to encourage the redevelopment of brownfield land by allowing companies to claim 150% Corporation Tax relief on qualifying remediation expenditure. The consultation proposes changes intended to make the relief more accessible and better aligned with modern development practices.
For landowners, developers and regeneration specialists, these proposed reforms could be significant. By improving access to LRR, the proposals could help offset remediation costs, making more brownfield developments commercially viable. This also supports the wider objective of bringing previously developed land back into use and reducing pressure on greenfield sites.
From a technical perspective, the proposals reinforce the importance of understanding ground conditions at an early stage. Robust site investigations, contamination assessments, and remediation strategies help identify constraints, reduce uncertainty and provide developers with greater confidence when assessing project viability.
At The JPP Group, our geo-environmental consultants work alongside our development planning, surveying, civil and structural engineering teams to provide coordinated advice from site acquisition through to development. By combining these disciplines, we help our clients identify risks early, develop practical remediation solutions and support the successful redevelopment of brownfield land.
With the consultation open until September, it will be interesting to see whether these proposals lead to meaningful changes that help unlock more brownfield redevelopment

Will these proposed reforms unlock more brownfield developments, or are further changes still needed to encourage regeneration?
