The new guidance from Active Travel England aims to provide stronger walking, wheeling and cycling routes to support local businesses and connect communities with one another, whilst enjoying the wider countryside.
With approximately 17% of England’s population living in rural areas, this new technical guidance from Active Travel England helps to create safe, accessible and attractive travel routes in these rural areas.
• Better connections between villages and nearby towns
• Improved safety on rural roads
• Support for tourism and local businesses
• Encouragement of sustainable travel choices
• Enhanced accessibility while protecting the character of the countryside
Amongst other things, the guidance covers design requirements for junctions, crossings, traffic signs, wayfinding and sets out geometric requirements. The improvements brought forward in this guidance will help communities to stay connected, whilst making active travel a more attractive option for everyday journeys and leisure trips.
This is a really helpful tool when looking at new rural developments and potential improvements to connectivity. One key scheme outlined in the design case studies is the Lias Line Greenway. A project that is utilising the disused Lias Line railway and connecting Leamington Spa to Rugby and Daventry through a high-quality walking, wheeling, and cycling greenway! We have some keen cyclists in our newly opened Leamington Spa office, who will no doubt be trying this route out.
